The Difference Between Wanting Growth and Living Growth

Almost everyone wants to grow. We want to become better leaders, strengthen our relationships, achieve meaningful goals, and create a life that reflects our deepest values.

Yet wanting growth and experiencing growth are two very different things.

The distance between the person we are today and the person we aspire to become is often measured by two powerful commitments: discipline and consistency.

Discipline gives us the courage to begin what matters. Consistency gives us the determination to continue when the excitement of beginning has disappeared.

Together, they transform intentions into measurable progress.

Discipline Is a Decision, Not a Feeling

One of the greatest misconceptions about personal development is the belief that we must feel motivated before taking action.

Motivation is valuable, but it is unreliable. Some mornings, we wake up inspired and energized. Other mornings, circumstances challenge our determination.

Discipline is what allows us to act on purpose regardless of how we feel.

A disciplined leader does not wait for perfect conditions before making difficult decisions.

A disciplined student does not depend entirely on inspiration to prepare for an examination.

A disciplined individual understands that meaningful growth requires deliberate choices, especially when those choices are uncomfortable.

Discipline is not punishment. Discipline is the structure we create to protect what matters most.

Consistency Turns Individual Actions Into Lasting Habits

A single decision can change our direction, but repeated decisions change our lives.

Consider someone committed to developing stronger leadership skills. Attending one seminar may introduce valuable ideas, but the transformation occurs when those ideas become daily practices.

Listening more attentively. Communicating more effectively. Accepting constructive feedback. Taking responsibility for outcomes.

Each action may appear small in isolation. However, repeated over time, these practices shape character, strengthen confidence, and improve performance.

Consistency does not require perfection.

There will be difficult days, unexpected interruptions, and occasional setbacks. The goal is not to avoid every mistake. The goal is to return to purposeful action rather than allowing one setback to become a permanent stopping point.

Progress is strengthened by repetition, not protected by perfection.

A Growth Mindset Changes How We Respond to Difficulty

In The Growth Mindset Blueprint, I emphasize the importance of examining how we interpret challenges, what we believe about our capacity to improve, and how those beliefs influence our responses.

When we view challenges as evidence of personal inadequacy, we often retreat.

When we understand challenges as opportunities for learning, we become more willing to adjust our approach and continue developing.

This distinction matters in education, leadership, entrepreneurship, and everyday life.

A growth mindset is not simply positive thinking. It is a commitment to learning, disciplined effort, thoughtful adjustment, and continued application.

The question is not merely, “Can I grow?”

The more important question is, “What am I prepared to practice consistently in order to grow?”

Five Actions to Strengthen Your Discipline and Consistency

  1. Define one meaningful growth objective. Identify something you genuinely want to improve. Be specific enough to recognize when progress occurs.
  2. Connect your objective to your purpose. Ask yourself why the goal matters and whom your growth will ultimately serve. Purpose provides direction when motivation weakens.
  3. Establish a realistic daily commitment. Choose one manageable action that supports your objective. A sustainable practice is more valuable than an ambitious plan that is quickly abandoned.
  4. Monitor progress and learn from setbacks. At the end of each week, examine what worked, what challenged you, and what needs to change. Use feedback as information rather than a reason to quit.
  5. Build accountability into your growth journey. Share your commitment with a trusted mentor, colleague, or accountability partner. Consistent reflection and honest conversations reinforce responsibility.

These five actions will not eliminate every difficulty, but they can create a practical structure for moving forward.

From Personal Growth to Collective Impact

Discipline and consistency are not important only for individual success.

Organizations become stronger when leaders consistently demonstrate integrity, accountability, and purposeful decision-making.

Educational institutions become more effective when learning is supported by sustained encouragement, clear expectations, and opportunities for improvement.

Communities benefit when individuals move beyond expressing concern and begin contributing through sustained service.

A Collision With Purpose exists to encourage this movement from awareness to responsibility, from responsibility to action, and from action to meaningful results.

Our growth becomes especially powerful when it creates opportunities for someone else to grow.

Your Purpose in Motion Challenge

During the next seven days, identify one personal or professional behavior that you want to strengthen.

Write it down.

Decide when you will practice it.

Commit to repeating it daily.

At the end of the week, reflect on three questions:

  • What did I learn about myself?
  • Where did discipline challenge me?
  • What will I continue doing next week?

Remember that you do not have to transform your entire life in one week. You simply need to begin building the habits that support the future you envision.

A Final Reflection

The measure of our commitment is not found exclusively in what we say we intend to accomplish. It is revealed in the actions we are willing to repeat.

Discipline creates the conditions for progress.

Consistency strengthens the foundation for lasting transformation.

Purpose gives meaning to both.

As I often remind individuals and organizations:

“Turning words into actions and actions into results.”

And always remember:

Growth is not accidental. Growth is designed.
